Robert Gillmor – Preening Stilts Cushion by We Love Cushions

£33.49

This beautiful single-sided Preening Stilts cushion is based on Robert Gillmor’s iconic artwork, and would fit well in a garden-room, sitting-room or bedroom.

Stilts are members of the same bird family as Avocets, and the similarities are clear – length of leg and the distinctive black and white of the plumage.  However, the Stilt wins hearts with its spectacular pinky red legs.  It has the longest leg, proportionate to body size, of any bird – they’re around 60% of its height.  This gives them an advantage in the foraging stakes as they can wade out into deeper water than other birds, in a quest for insects which they pick from the surface of the water.

An ideal house-warming gift for young and old alike.

Redshank Mug by Madeleine Floyd

£12.95

The Redshank Mug by Madeleine Floyd features this delicate wader in an exquisite water colour drawing.

The Redshank has beautiful orange-red legs, from which it gets its common name, and its long bill which it uses for digging around for worms is also orange at the base.  It breeds in north west Europe and winters in sunnier climes – Africa, India and Indonesia.  Its loud piping call is captured in lettering around the base of the mug.  And if egg-spotting is your thing, there’s an illustration of the delicately speckled egg on the other side of the mug!

Curlew Mug by Madeleine Floyd

£12.95

The Curlew Mug by Madeleine Floyd features this large wading bird which is known as much for its haunting call as for its distinctive curved bill.

Grasslands, farmland, heath and moor all play host to the Curlew who uses its long down-curved bill to search the mud for worms, shellfish and shrimps.  Its eponymous “coor-lew” call is depicted in lettering around the base of the mug, and if you’re into egg-spotting, the Curlew’s pale creamy egg with brown markings is depicted on the other side of the mug.

Seabirds Puffin Mug by Madeleine Floyd

£12.95

The Seabirds Puffin Mug by Madeleine Floyd features this comic sea bird alongside three of his other sea-going companions and some aquatic plantlife in an exquisite water colour drawing.

All four birds are on the conservation list and need protection, though the Puffin is the most endangered of them.  The Common and Black-headed Gulls are both to be seen on Britain’s sea shores throughout the year.  Confusingly, the Black-headed Gull is actually more common than the Common Gull and has a brown head (rather than a black one) for most of the year.  The Sanderling is a passing visitor, prefering to spend cool summers in the Arctic!  Its peculiar scampering gait is on account of it only having three toes where other waders have four.

Large Godwit Jug – Sandra Vick

£33.00

Large Godwit Jug – Sandra Vick

This beautiful large Godwit jug features artist Sandra Vick’s black and white design of godwits – long-legged waders – around the bottom of the bone china jug.  Superlatives abound in relation to this migrant; in 2020 a male godwit flew over 7,500 miles non-stop in its migration from Alaska to New Zealand, setting a new record for avian non-stop flight, but in the 1600s it was known as “the daintiest of dishes”, which may have contributed to its decline – it is currently on the Red list of endangered bird species.

Perfect as a milk or cream jug, or a flower vase , the large godwit jug makes an ideal gift for birthdays, house-warming and other occasions.

Woodcock linocut print by Katie Fuller

£35.00

Woodcock linocut print by Katie Fuller

In this Woodcock linocut print by Katie Fuller, the artist captures both the sturdiness and the excellent camouflage of the bird’s plumage.

A wading bird, the woodcock lives in woodlands and on heathland. It is mostly nocturnal and if disturbed will fly in a zig-zag pattern between the trees before dropping back to the ground and the safety of the undergrowth.  The woodcocks that breed in the UK are mostly residents, but they are joined by wintering birds from Finland and Russia.  Male woodcocks perform a display flight known as roding, taking to the air at dawn and at dusk to patrol large areas of forest and heathland, calling in a series of grunts and squeaks, competing with other males to attract females.

The print is a limited edition, signed and numbered by the artist and would make a perfect gift for housewarming, birthdays or other celebrations.
