It is the male whose song is so lyrical, the female by contrast keeps stum! The nightingale’s brain accounts for its vast vocal repertoire – the part of the brain responsible for producing sound is much larger in the nightingale than in other vocal competitors. This allows him to produce up to 1,000 different sounds! The skylark and blackbird come a poor second and third to with just 340 and 100 noises to their names, respectively.
