£3.50The Yellowhammer Flock Greetings Card by Rachel Hudson is a reminder of just why this brightly coloured little bird is such a favourite of the British hedgerow.
Sadly, though they’re a favourite they are now rarely seen. The lack of food and decline in their nesting habitat over the last 30 years means they are now on the Red List. Both its familiar name and its Latin one – Emberiza citrinella – reference the bright yellow of the male’s head and underparts, and this little bird also has a conical bill, ideal for cracking the seeds which are its staple diet. All the birds in this card design are yellowhammers but in fact, during the winter they frequently flock with other species like buntings, finches, and sparrows especially when foraging for seeds or roosting in dense bushes or hedges.
