Lapwings are something of a favourite at Bee Eater HQ. With their smart iridescent plumage, distinctive round-winged shape in flight and haunting wail, lapwings can often be spotted during winter on ploughed fields. A group of lapwings is called a ‘deceit’ – named after the way the parent birds lure predators away from their nests by feigning a broken wing! The innocence of the lapwings is off-set in this image by the predatory presence of the falcon overhead.

It is thought that Japanese Bantams first arrived in Japan from China in the early 1600s when they started to appear in Japanese paintings, and that they reached the UK in the 1860s. The first Japanese Bantam Club was formed at the Crystal Palace (London) show on 12th November 1912.
