The stonechat gets his name from his distinctive call – it sounds like two stones being struck together. A heath, bog and conifer tree dweller, the stonechat feeds almost exclusively from insects on the ground, a rare distinction in the avian world.

This beautiful Marsh Tit linocut print by Katie Fuller was created by the artist for the British Trust for Ornithology’s ‘Red 67’ project, and is part of a signed, limited edition of just 8 prints. Published in 2020, the BTO’s book includes paintings, by well known and up and coming UK wildlife artists, of all 67 UK birds on the red endangered list. The Marsh Tit is similar in appearance to the Willow Tit and so hard to identify that ornithologists didn’t realise there were two species until 1897!

In this Woodcock linocut print by Katie Fuller, the artist captures both the sturdiness and the excellent camouflage of the bird’s plumage.
A wading bird, the woodcock lives in woodlands and on heathland. It is mostly nocturnal and if disturbed will fly in a zig-zag pattern between the trees before dropping back to the ground and the safety of the undergrowth. The woodcocks that breed in the UK are mostly residents, but they are joined by wintering birds from Finland and Russia. Male woodcocks perform a display flight known as roding, taking to the air at dawn and at dusk to patrol large areas of forest and heathland, calling in a series of grunts and squeaks, competing with other males to attract females.
The print is a limited edition, signed and numbered by the artist and would make a perfect gift for housewarming, birthdays or other celebrations.
