All four birds are on the conservation list and need protection, though the Puffin is the most endangered of them. The Common and Black-headed Gulls are both to be seen on Britain’s sea shores throughout the year. Confusingly, the Black-headed Gull is actually more common than the Common Gull and has a brown head (rather than a black one) for most of the year. The Sanderling is a passing visitor, prefering to spend cool summers in the Arctic! Its peculiar scampering gait is on account of it only having three toes where other waders have four.
