Black Grouse Mug by Madeleine Floyd

Males will gather at traditional sites and display to show dominance over each other . The females watch from a safe distance, hidden in the surrounding vegetation, before making their choice. They lay between six and eleven eggs in May in a carefully concealed, moss-lined scrape in the ground; the chicks are independent after about three months.

Weighing under 10g, the wren is a truly tiny troglodyte (this is its Latin name, meaning cave-dweller). Hard to spot due to its size, hedge-coloured plumage and rapid darting movements, the wren’s flicking tail is often the visual cue that alerts us to its presence.
More often heard than seen, the Wren has a call the volume of which belies its diminutive size, and this is captured in lettering on the mug. And if egg-spotting’s your thing, there’s an illustration of a delicately coloured egg on the other side of the mug!
