Harvest Mice Greetings Card by The Wildlife Trusts

The Harvest Mice greetings card by The Wildlife Trusts is blank inside for your own message and is ideal for birthdays, moving house and other celebrations. With its beady eyes and prehensile tail (which it wraps around a stem for balance), it’s a great favourite here at Bee Eater HQ!  We love its Latin name – Micromys minutus – and its round, woven-grass nests, though they’re difficult to spot.

Foxes are social animals and live in loose family groups. These are normally made up of a breeding male, female and their young. The litter of four or five cubs, which are born in an underground den, are then cared for by both the male and female.  By autumn, the cubs are fully self-sufficient. Some will leave to establish their own territories, while others may remain with the family group. Those that stay sometimes help their parents to raise the following year’s young.

Related to otters and weasels, the pine marten was once one of the most common UK carnivores.  Today it is one of the rarest.  Loss of habitat, the fur industry and predator control associated with game shooting caused a dramatic decline in the pine marten population during the 19th century and by the early 20th century, the species was close to extinction.  They are now being reintroduced in a number of locations, and should they thrive, there could also be a knock on effect for the red squirrel as the pine marten is partial to a grey squirrel, which is the red’s main competition!

Otters were once a common sight in British rivers but suffered a decline in the 1970s due to the pesticides then used in farming.  These have now been withdrawn and the otter is making a remarkable come back.  That said, they’re secretive and swim low in the water so are hard to spot!

Red Fox Greetings Card by Ben Rothery

This card features an exquisite painting of a Red Fox by wildlife illustrator and author Ben Rothery.  Ben’s work is inspired by nature and by traditional natural history illustration but presented with a contemporary twist.

The Fox is a highly adaptable British mammal, to be found in urban as well as rural areas. Most active around dawn and dusk and often heard before it is seen, the Fox is family-minded with both parents helping rear and feed their young, who are born in the spring and are ready to live independently (even though some don’t) by the autumn.

The Sea Otters Greetings Card shows an exquisite painting of the furry mammals by wildlife illustrator and author Ben Rothery.  Ben’s work is inspired by nature and by traditional natural history illustration but presented with a contemporary twist.

A superstar of the mammalian world, the sea otter is the heaviest member of the weasel family.  With a million hairs per square inch of flesh, their fur is the densest of any mammal.  They are one of the few mammal species to use tools to help them hunt and feed, wedging a rock between their chest and the “armpit” of a foreleg and pounding shells against it to open them up! The sea otter is also the only marine mammal capable of flipping over boulders on the sea floor, and the only one to catch fish with its forepaws and not its mouth.
