Otters were once a common sight in British rivers but suffered a decline in the 1970s due to the pesticides then used in farming. These have now been withdrawn and the otter is making a remarkable come back. That said, they’re secretive and swim low in the water so are hard to spot!

Hares, with their large hind legs and distinctive long, black-tipped ears, can run at up 45 mph when escaping danger. The females are known for their spring-time boxing. Otter Greetings Card by Rachel Hudson
£3.50The Otter Greetings Card by Rachel Hudson shows the UK’s only native otter, Lutra lutra, enjoying a meal of crab atop a sea cliff overlooking Mull’s main town of Tobermory.
Whilst otters can be seen throughout the UK, the otters of Mull are particularly well-loved as they feed throughout the day. This means they’re more readily spotted than their southern relatives whose nocturnal hunting habits make them less frequently seen.
