Avocets are an East Anglian post-war success story having been absent from British coastal wetlands for half a century thanks to over-enthusiastic Victorian egg hunters! For this reason, they were chosen as the emblem of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
The distinctive black and white plumage as well as the long curved bill make them a joy to watch when feeding on the waters edge – they sweep the water with their bill, feeding on crustaceans and larvae.
