Bullfinch Greetings Card by Rachel Hudson
£3.50The Bullfinch Greetings Card by Rachel Hudson shows a very cheery male Bullfinch on a branch with snow falling
An adaptable feeder, the bullfinch will eat buds and shoots in spring and, handily, has a special sac at the foot of its mouth to store food. During the winter months it switches to seeds and berries, extracting the oil-rich kernels from bramble (blackberry) berries while discarding the husks!

Goldcrest in Fir Tree Greetings Card by Rachel Hudson
£3.50The Goldcrest in Fir Tree Greetings Card by Rachel Hudson shows one of our favourite birds, here at Bee Eater Gifts HQ!
The Goldcrest is Britain’s smallest bird, weighing in at around the same as a 20p piece. Its colours, speed of flight and tiny size are very distinctive. The yellow and black stripe on the head stands as a crest when they are alarmed or trying to attract a mate. Rachel Hudson’s image shows the bird perched in a fir tree with snow falling.

Heron and Frozen Pond Greetings Card by Rachel Hudson
£3.50The Heron and Frozen Pond Greetings Card by Rachel Hudson shows a statuesque Grey Heron waiting patiently, at the side of a frozen pond whilst moorhens attempt to take off and land!
A bird of wetland areas, the Grey Heron is a piscivore, hunting for its prey in both fresh and saltwater, and can be seen around lakes, rivers, ponds, marshes and on the sea coast. During winter – when the mortality rate inevitably increases -herons abandon their group breeding colonies (heronries) and hunt alone in open areas, wetlands, rivers, and farmland.

Flock of Crows Greetings Card by Rachel Hudson
£3.50The Flock of Crows Greetings Card by Rachel Hudson is a reminder of the aerial abilities of one of our largest corvids and gives the lie to the saying “as the crow flies” – because they don’t navigate in straight lines! In this illustration, the artist shows them wheeling over rooves and trees towards evening.
Crows hold a special place in British folklore, no doubt because of their exceptional skills – they recognise human faces, remember who treats them well (and who doesn’t) and occasionally reward the patience of those who feed them with small gifts of shiny objects.

Little Egret and Boat House Greetings Card by Rachel Hudson
£3.50The Little Egret and Boat House Greetings Card by Rachel Hudson captures the distinctive shape of the Little Egret in flight, with legs trailing, over a salt marsh at Newtown Nature Reserve on the Isle of Wight. Oystercatchers forage in the shallows below and a group has taken flight too. A cormorant watches on from a post, golden plover graze in the background and a curlew enters the scene top left – what a wonderful array of coastal birds!
The Little Egret has only lately become a familiar sight in the UK and can now be found along the south coast and in East Anglia. It eats mostly fish, though amphibians, small reptiles, mammals and birds as well as crustaceans, molluscs and insects should all be vigilant when this bird is at large.

Starlings on Harbour Wall Greetings Card by Rachel Hudson
£3.50The Starlings on Harbour Wall Greetings Card by Rachel Hudson captures something of the starlings’ endurance as they hunker down on a harbour wall to the chiming of masts from sailboats.
Starlings can be seen all over the UK. Their glossy green and purple-black feathers are speckled. Though famed for their incredible murmurations of flocks sometimes numbering tens of thousands, Starling numbers have been greatly declining over the past few decades and they are currently on the Red list.

Curlew and Grass of Parnassus Greetings Card by Rachel Hudson
£3.50The Curlew and Grass of Parnassus Greetings Card by Rachel Hudson is something of a favourite here at Bee Eater HQ. The strong composition illustrates the Curlew’s iconic bill as well as the stark environment it lives in.
Grasslands, farmland, heath and moor all play host to the Curlew who uses its long down-curved bill to search the mud for worms, shellfish and shrimps. You may hear its eponymous “coor-lew” call before you see it as it blends in well with its surroundings. This illustration was done by the artist by a sea loch in the Inner Hebrides.

Otters were once a common sight in British rivers but suffered a decline in the 1970s due to the pesticides then used in farming. These have now been withdrawn and the otter is making a remarkable come back. That said, they’re secretive and swim low in the water so are hard to spot!
