The Fox is a highly adaptable British mammal, to be found in urban as well as rural areas. Ben’s illustration shows a Yellow Seahorse, native to the coasts of China and Australia. The British Isles are home to two species of Seahorse – the Spiny Seahorse and the Short-snouted Seahorse. These tiny marine creates are fascinating – they pair for life, they change colour when they approach each other and in order to disguise themselves. The female transfers eggs to the male, who self-fertilises them, carries them as they grow and gives birth to them!

A superstar of the mammalian world, the sea otter is the heaviest member of the weasel family. With a million hairs per square inch of flesh, their fur is the densest of any mammal. They are one of the few mammal species to use tools to help them hunt and feed, wedging a rock between their chest and the “armpit” of a foreleg and pounding shells against it to open them up! The sea otter is also the only marine mammal capable of flipping over boulders on the sea floor, and the only one to catch fish with its forepaws and not its mouth.
