With their smart iridescent plumage, distinctive round-winged shape in flight and haunting wail, lapwings can often be spotted during winter on ploughed fields. A group of lapwings is called a ‘deceit’ – named after the way the parent birds lure predators away from their nests by feigning a broken wing!
