Despite being the tiniest of the world’s migrating birds, hummingbirds don’t seek safety in numbers but prefer to fly solo, clocking up to 500 miles at a time. They also have a unique ability to fly backwards which is pretty handy for feeding purposes. Not everything works as it seems though; they have no sense of smell and their feet and legs don’t serve the obvious purpose – they can’t walk or hop and only use their feet for shuffling sideways whilst perched on a branch.
