With the distinction of being the world’s largest living terrestrial, the giraffe has many distinguishing features. Its long neck is chief amongst them and it also bears its weight on only two of its five toes – the third and fourth. Those funny knobbly things on its head – ossicones – are permanently covered in fur (with tufts of hair on top for the ladies, whereas the men’s are bald on top). They are used by the male both to court his female and to batter his male rivals. This peaceful herbivore enjoys a relatively long life and may clock up 35 years on the African savannah.
