The biggest of the bumblebees they are named after the buff-coloured tail of their queen, though the tail is completely out of sight here. They love all types of flowers and are shown here supping nectar from the pendulous blue flowers of the borage herb. They nest underground in large groups of up to 600 bees often using old mammal nests.
